Once in his life he carried his self-organisation to extremes: Soon after marrying in 1844, he began to speculate about the health of his wife and, allegedly, wrote to another Irish lady of his acquaintance: ?Should anything happen to her, will you supply her place – as soon as a proper period of decent mourning is over?? Eventually, his wife outlived him.
Does a so-called amateur author take himself generally seriously as an author? Only the one does, who perceives his writing as a duty towards himself. To write something now and again, to let the novel lay ten years unfinished in the drawer, signifies the nonexistence of genuine regard for the own writing, but the writing is considered as a leisure employment. To be a writer, is a vocation!
A great privilege and at the same time a great curse for the writer is the fact that he must take the time for his work from himself and from others.
