Board members want to create vocational school in San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO – Two school board members are pushing district staff to open a vocational/career academy in the San Bernardino City Unified School District in the near future.

Judi Penman and Teresa Parra Craig are behind the effort to establish a trade school to provide more alternative educational opportunities for San Bernardino teens.

“We have a lot of kids, who are very hands on and learn differently, and we need to give them options to compete and learn,” said Parra Craig. “We also have a ton of charter schools opening every time we turn around, because they offer alternative education.

“For San Bernardino unified to compete with those schools and the current economic market and global economy we have to offer this.”

Parra Craig first expressed a need for a vocational academy in the district about seven years ago, because she felt kids were not being offered enough in the way of alternative education.

To get ideas, she attended conferences and visited schools that offered an academic program and trade school and had the same ethnic and cultural mix as San Bernardino.

Since then, she has continued to bring it up at board meetings.

“I am a board member with a vision to bring something to the table,” she said. “I recommend we don’t stop with a trade academy that we offer safety and technology academies as well.”

Both women are interested in having staff choosing the right location for such a school.

Penman, a graduate of Pacific High School, believes it would be a good choice.

Two years ago after getting several calls from concerned parents about kids fighting after school, she decided to step up efforts to make a change there.

“At the time I started geting calls from parents wanting to transfer kids to Cajon because of the negative activity,” she said. “I must have received about 120 requests.

“I was shocked and upset that people didn’t want to go to my high school.’

The violence has since died down, but her desire to see the school serve a different purpose has not.

Her idea is to see the school become a vocational career academy for high school students starting in ninth grade.

The training offered would be in trades that will offer the most jobs in the future including engineering, nursing, architecture and plumbing.

So far, Penman and Parra Craig have reached out to several unions to get information on internships for students.

“I feel like we need to give these kids something to get excited about, because right now we are not using our creativity to reach out to the demographic in this area,” said Penman. “The goal is to keep kids in school before they start dropping out in ninth grade.”

Superintendent Arturo Delgado said he has been directed by the board to establish a planning committee to see how feasible such an academy would be and where it should be placed.

At this time it is too soon to name the exact location of a vocational school, he said.

“There is the potential that it could be at any one of the district schools, including Pacific,” he said

THE might of one of Britain’s top law firms has come down on one small businessman.

Graham Fielden ran a now-defunct property firm in the North-West and says he’s being fleeced by advertising outfit Pop Systems, run by our old chum Parrish Cobb.

Pop Systems took four payments of pounds 468 from Graham in 2006 after saying that it would advertise his firm on a TV screen in waiting rooms at Royal Bolton Hospital.

But, says Graham, the screens either didn’t work or were in the wrong place.

Now debt collectors Cristen Dex say he signed a rolling contract that’s been automatically renewed and he owes another pounds 2,143.

When stunned Graham tried to find out if other businesses were affected, he was jumped on by lawyers Pannone, which act for Pop Systems

If the quality is

If the quality is missing in the formula, your alliances will most definitely fail.

Finger pointing is one of the worst things that can happen in a relationship. The business relationship must be preserved at all costs. The saying goes “never burn a bridge as you never know when you need to cross it again”. I had a partner that did not believe in that philosophy and, six years down the road, he found that he needed to deal with me again. Instead of repairing the damage, the information he needed was obtained by a mutual acquaintance. Since I did not burn bridges, I readily gave out the information.

Surveys show that 6%

Surveys show that 6% of children are reported to be constipated with boys the main victims. This trend is reversed in adults and women are far more likely to suffer from this problem than men. As we grow older the differences even out and constipation is common in the elderly of both sexes. There are three basic descriptions given by people who suffer from this uncomfortable condition. They complain about the stools being too hard, too large or too small. They say they have to strain and push when passing a stool and that they don’t feel the need to go as often as they think they should.

Although beautiful, the space

Although beautiful, the space is often wasted. Not the case with one of the quality tall wine racks.

Tall wine racks are generally grouped together under the category of instant cellars, wall mounted wine racks or custom wine racks. They are made out of high grade, close-grained wood, with is very sturdy. They can be stained or painted to match the existing d?cor or color palette.

A tall wine rack would look classy behind the bar. Several tall wine racks can be combined to great a storage facility or only two separated by a counter to create you bar. You decide. Only you know what your needs and desires are and by perusing one of the many customizable tall wine racks on the market, you will find what you’re looking for.

Taller wine racks sometimes need to be mounted to a weight-bearing wall. One bottle is heavy; hundreds of bottles can spell disaster to an owner who has not purchased the proper wine rack to store his collection.

You can save more by having a professional graphic designer design one or more templates for your brochures and flyers. Then you and your colleagues can plug in content as needed for a series of flyers or brochures.

Will your print or online piece stand alone or be reviewed as one of several communications from various nonprofits and other entities?

If you are advertising in a local newspaper or taking a page in a community guide, it is critical that your ad is designed to look at least as (if not more) professional than the other ads in the publication. Otherwise, readers are likely to overlook your promotion.

poisoning by eating too much

poisoning by eating too much liver (which might not be a problem for very many people!) And you can experience vitamin D poisoning usually through having too many vitamin D. supplements (since most foods do not carry a large amount of vitamin D). Also, these poisonings take place over time, and rarely happen immediately from an overdose.

So how do you know if you are accidentally poisoning yourself? Again, our bodies work best in moderation so when something is “out of whack” with the way it’s supposed to be, our bodies have a way of alerting us. If you experience inexplicable headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, dehydration, constipation, or blurred vision, you should talk to your doctor about the possibility of vitamin poisoning.

So how can you avoid vitamin poisoning? First, you need to recognize that a little bit of extra vitamins in your diet is okay, since your body will often excrete the excess. So by eating a balanced diet, and by supplementing it with a multivitamin, you are likely in range for healthy eating. However, if you find yourself eating specific foods and taking a lot of specific vitamins, you may be at greater risk. The best thing to do, is make sure that you are following the directions on the bottle.

His best season as a

His best season as a professional was in 1995 when he was selected for the Pro Bowl after rushing for 1,083 yards. His 4.59-yard rushing average ranked fourth in the NFL that year. He also collected 177 catches for 1,559 yards and four touchdowns in his career.

Despite his massive frame, Heyward was a beloved teammate, a jokester and one of the most respected and liked players in the NFL. Even after the tumor, known as a chordoma, caused him to have a stroke a couple of years ago, he remained upbeat. Even after the chordoma wrapped itself around the base of his brain like an Anaconda in its death squeeze – it did not defeat his spirit.

Former teammate Bobby Hebert recently told ESPN.com that despite his serious illness, “The one thing he’s still got and that hasn’t changed a bit is that devilish sense of humor of his. Hopefully, that will keep him going for a while.” Unfortunately, it didn’t. Heyward succumbed two weeks later.

I for one refuse to remember Heyward as the guy who lost his battle with cancer.
