AN investigation has begun into why a sheriff twice did not arrive to hear a case of a man accused of head butting a police officer.

The absence of temporary Sheriff Ian Duguid, QC, led to Scott McMurray, 24, of Renfrew, walking free at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday after his defence argued against further adjournment of the case.

Mr McMurray denied the charges against him.

Sheriff Duguid also did not appear in court for the McMurray trial as expected on July 9. It is understood he did not receive notification of the date through the court service booking unit.

It is also believed Sheriff Duguid could not attend Mr McMurray’s case given his involvement with a High Court murder trial, although court officials in Paisley were unaware of this.

A Scottish Court Service spokesman said: “The matter will be fully investigated.”
